It is effectively no more than an empty placeholder restoration, a backward negation clothed as a forward affirmation. ‘Make America Great Again,’ as far as one can tell, connotes little more than making America white-owned again or male-dominated again. In this case it’s far less clear than in non-Western cases what glorious past is meant to be restored. I allude to the infelicitously labeled ‘populist’ stirrings across America and, indeed, much of the so-called ‘West.’ ![]() It is here, I believe, that we see their deep kinship with other ‘movements’ more pseudo-restorationist than neo-restorationist thanks to the fact that there’s little or nothing in these cases to restore. And the hurt is understood in all cases to have come from the same place that these movements all now view as ‘ degenerate’ – ‘the West.’ For all of them also share a stark dose of ressentiment, a sense of aggrievement and hurt. ![]() ![]() But they are not simply ‘retro’ or nostalgic. All of these movements are of course neo-restorationist in one way or another.
